Safety Tips

For the safety of you and your pet, here are some things to remember when arranging to pick up your lost animal:

  • Meet in a public area (fire station, veterinarian's office).
  • Do not send money to a stranger that claims they have your pet.
  • Be wary of pet recovery services, most are scams.
  • Ask the person who is claiming to have your pet to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information.
  • Never go alone to pick up your pet; tell someone where you are going.
  • Bring proof of ownership (medical records, photos, etc.)
  • Never agree to pay a reward until you have your pet in hand.
  • If someone has your pet but demands money and won't return your pet without being paid, call the police.

Microchipping

One of the best ways to ensure a lost pet is reunited with its owner is through microchipping.

Microchips are small implants (approximately the size of a grain of rice) that use a unique number to identify a registered pet. Any shelter or veterinary office can scan an animal to check for a microchip.

Animal Services offers affordable microchipping for just $15!

Don’t forget to register your pet’s microchip—it’s the fastest way to be reunited.
