OVERVIEW

As part of Mayor Teresa Jacobs’ initiative to connect students with their local government, she established the Youth Leadership Conference in 2011. Conference participants include Orange County Public Schools’ 21 public high schools. Each year, Mayor Jacobs invites the high school principals to select 10 of their student leaders to attend the annual Conference.

MAYOR-FOR-A-DAY CHALLENGE

During the Conference, Mayor Jacobs presents a challenge to the selected high-school groups in attendance to produce and submit a video of how they would address the social and community issues facing their generation. The videos were posted to the Mayor’s Facebook page and the school group that received the video with the most “votes” was named Mayor for a Day. The winning school will have the opportunity to learn even more about how their Orange County Government functions as they shadow Mayor Jacobs for a day.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Conference is to expose our young citizens to the many opportunities available to get involved in Orange County Government. Students learn how county government functions, how to participate in community initiatives and how to strengthen their personal leadership skills. The event is ideal for young leaders who participate in student government, community service clubs, debate teams, honor societies, and drama clubs.
