Orange County Fire Rescue Responds to Hazardous Material Spill at Water Park

Orange County, Fl., Orange County Fire Rescue Special Operations Squads have cleaned up a chlorine spill at the Aquatica Water Park at 10301 International Drive.

The initial call came in at approximately 11:03 this morning reporting that a chemical container was bubbling on a service road around the water park.  Orange County firefighters quickly arrived on scene and found a bubbling 5-gallon container of Sodium Hypochlorite.

Sodium Hypochlorite is highly concentrated pool chlorine.  It is very reactive to water.  Firefighters specially trained in handling hazardous materials were able to remove the affected chemical to a safe area and neutralize it.  They inspected the remaining containers in the area and verified no additional leaks.

Because the chemical is both highly corrosive and dangerous to inhale, Hazmat teams had to wear specialized encapsulation suits to approach the product.  As a precaution, guests in a small area of the water park were moved to a safe location.

No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of this incident.  Crews had the spill completely cleaned up and the park returned to normal operation in less than 2 hours.
