Job Description: Forensic Technician

General Functions

Provides assistance in the morgue in autopsy dissection, photography, and evidence processing and x-ray examinations under the direction of the Medical Examiner.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work

  • This is responsible medical work examining and dissecting cadavers. An employee in a position assigned to this classification is responsible for assisting the Medical Examiner with autopsies, photographic documentation, processing and submitting tissue for microscopic examination, collecting body fluids and tissues for toxicological examination, taking measurements and weighs, trace evidence and injury data. Provides accountability of evidence and personal effects, forensic photography, performs x-ray examinations and processes x-ray films and all needed technical support.
     
  • Works under adverse conditions, performing autopsies on bodies having known or unknown infectious diseases.
     
  • Work is performed under the close supervision and direction of the Medical Examiner or assigned supervisor, who evaluates performance based on technical knowledge demonstrated in performing assigned duties.

Representative Duties & Assignments

  • Provides assistance in the morgue in autopsy dissection.
     
  • Photographically documents wounds and areas of injury on the body and also documents, through sketching these areas of injury on the injury data sheets.
     
  • Assists in the collection and preservation of trace evidence.
     
  • Assists in the collection of personal effects.
     
  • Assists in the collection and preservation for submission of tissues for histological examination and body fluids and tissues for toxicological examination.
     
  • Takes and develops x-rays.
     
  • Lifts and handles corpses while assisting in autopsies.
     
  • Stands and climbs on footstool or examination table to take forensic photographs.
     
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of medically related experience and comprehension of anatomy. Training and/or education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
