Orange County Firefighters Fight Large Scrap Metal Fire

Orange County, FL., Orange County Firefighters spent Thursday afternoon battling a fire in a large pile of scrap metal at TMR Recycling located at 51 W. Landstreet Road in southern Orange County.

Fire crews were notified of the fire by a 9-1-1 call from an employee at the facility at 11:19 this morning. A large column of thick black smoke could be seen from miles around.

The first firefighters arrived in four minutes and found a large pile of scrap metal and crushed cars on fire. That crew quickly began deploying hose lines to contain the fire while a head count was conducted of recycling employees to ensure everyone was accounted for.

During the peak of firefighting operations, over 35 firefighters and support staff worked to contain the fire. Once it was practical to do so, TMR provided crews and equipment to break up the pile allowing firefighters to flow water to the root of the fire.

Firefighters are expecting to be on scene into the night to work through the dense pile of metal and debris. The fire occurred in an industrial area so no evacuations were necessary. People in the area will continue to see smoke as firefighting operations continue.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
