Orange County, Fla., Orange County Firefighters and Paramedics treated 15 patients after a car crashed into a day care facility Wednesday afternoon.
Orange County Fire Rescue was notified of the crash at 3:06 p.m. The 9-1-1 caller reported that a vehicle had been struck and pushed into the KinderCare day care located at 4035 N. Goldenrod Road. Firefighters from Fire Station 63 arrived on scene in three minutes and found multiple injured people inside the building.
Firefighters quickly determined the severity of the scene and called for additional resources including a Special Operations Squad to safely remove one child who was pinned by the vehicle. A Mass Casualty Incident was declared due to the number of patients.
A total of 15 patients were treated by Orange County Fire Rescue. 13 patients were transported to area hospitals. 12 of those patients were children and 1 was an adult. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. An additional 2 patients were checked at the scene but did not go to the hospital.
During a Mass Casualty Incident, emergency medical professionals quickly triage all people involved to determine severity of injuries. Additional resources are brought to the scene and patients are sent to a variety of hospitals to ensure no emergency room gets overwhelmed.
Over 50 Orange County Fire Rescue personnel responded to this scene as well as law enforcement and medical staff. There were over 50 children at the day care at the time of the crash. Once the injured were removed, firefighters worked with law enforcement officers to reunite the uninjured children with their parents.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. As of 8:15pm they are seeking information regarding the driver of the second vehicle which contributed to this crash.
