Mayor Jacobs Unveils Unique Water Improvement Project

Orange County, FL – As part of her “Home for Life” sustainability initiative, Mayor Teresa Jacobs will introduce a unique water improvement project that removes sediment, trash and other pollutants from storm water before it reaches one of Orange County’s lakes. The Lake Mary Jess Drainage and Water Quality Improvement project is designed to treat storm water from State Road 527 (Orange Avenue) and surrounding commercial development by redirecting it into a new, specially designed treatment facility that captures trash, sediment and pollutants such as phosphorus before discharging downstream to Lake Mary Jess.

The project is a joint effort involving the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Edgewood, the Lake Mary Jess Advisory Board and the Commerce Center Industrial Park.

Mayor Jacobs will host the official ribbon-cutting with representatives from each of the project participants, as well as residents from the surrounding neighborhoods. July is also Lakes Appreciation Month which highlights the importance of lakes as an integral part of Florida’s quality of life. Clean lakes are a key component to public and environment health and safety and serve as a wonderful recreational resource for boating, swimming and fishing.
