Orange County Citizen Corps Council

    Enabling Legislation:
    Resolution No. 2004-M-45 was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on October 19, 2004.

    Membership:
    Nine members to be appointed in the following manner: one resident from each commissioner district, appointed by the district commissioner and three at large residents appointed by the County Mayor. The membership of the Council shall include representation from Orange County. The County will endeavor to appoint individuals from the municipal jurisdictions within Orange County. All appointments must be confirmed by the Board of County Commissioners.

    Term Length: 2 Years

    Term Of Office:
    The terms of office of members of the Council shall begin on January 1, 2005 and be for two years and shall expire at midnight on December 31 of even numbered years. Each members shall serve until his or her successor is chosen, and all members serve at the pleasure of the Board and may be removed without cause and without entitlement to a hearing upon a vote of five members of the Board. Any member appointed to fill an unexpired term shall complete that term and only be eligible for one additional two-year term. No member may serve more than two consectuive two-year terms.

    Powers and Duties:
    The Orange County Citizen Corps Council is created to assist in the efforts of training and educating citizens on emergency preparedness, crime prevention, and disaster planning. The primary objectives of the Citizen Corps Council are to: a) Match the needs of first responders with the skills and abilities of volunteers to make their families, homes, and communities safer from the threats of terrorism, crime, and disasters. b) Educate the public on safety, help citizens take an active role in protecting themselves from harm, and teach citizens what to do in the event of a crisis. c) Spearhead efforts to offer citizens new and existing volunteer opportunities, educationa information, and training courses to address crime, terrorism, and natural disaster risks. d) Promote all Citizen Corps programs and activities across the community. e) Capture innovative practices and report accomplishments that can be replicated in other communities. f) Survey the community to assess increased awareness and participation.
