Orange County Animal Services Participates in National Event for Pet Overpopulation Awareness

Orlando, Fla. – Saturday, August 15th is National Homeless Animal Day.  To commemorate this day, Orange County Animal Services supports The International Society of Animal Rights by participating in a candlelight vigil to bring attention to homeless pets across the nation.

Every year, thousands of adoptable animals are euthanized in America simply because there are not enough homes for them.  The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) began "National Homeless Animals Day" to publicize the magnitude of the problem of dog and cat overpopulation. From modest beginnings in 1992, National Homeless Animals Day has grown enormously. Animal rights organizations, and individuals from around the world have taken part in the event to promote adoption and spay/neuter programs.

Locally, Orange County Animal Services will participate in ISAR's 18th annual candlelight vigil this Saturday, August 15th.  The event will take place in the Orange County Animal Services parking lot.  This FREE event welcomes the public and leashed pets.  "This is the 16th year I have done this event, and we still have a long way to go," said Susan Buzer, local representative for ISAR.  Having a day dedicated to homeless animals creates awareness for more pet adoptions and for spay/neuter programs," she said.

Orange County Animal Services Manger, Katherine Lockett will attend the event and speak on the issue of pet overpopulation and the accomplishments made to reduce humane euthanasia among adoptable animals.  "The numbers of animals coming into our shelter continue to increase each year," said Lockett.  "Impounds increased by six percent from 2008, this event embodies our motto: saving one animal at a time," she added.
