Barriers - Pool or spa barriers may be a fence or wall that completely surrounds the pool or spa area. The fence or wall is usually 4-5 feet high or higher depending upon local zoning ordinance. The gates to the fence should be self-latching and self- locking and high enough to prevent a crawling baby from reaching the latch
Life Vests
Personal Flotation Devices (Life Vests, flotation devices etc.) - Life vests or jackets or personal flotation devices provide buoyancy in water. Jackets are designed for adults and children and should met the U.S. Coast Guard specifications. For more information, check the U.S. Coast Guard's web site.
Flotation Rings
Flotation Device Life Rings - A flotation device that should meet U.S.Coast Guard specifications and that will assist a drowning victim to stay afloat.
Shepherds Hooks
Life Hook or Shepherd's Hooks - This hook with an extension pole may be used as rescue equipment at a pool. It provides an extended reach to a drowning victim.
Life Lines
Life Line - A floatable line usually used to mark a swimming area or to designate the separation of the deep end from the shallow end of a pool or swimming area.
First Aid Kits
First Aid kits - All pool areas should have a small first aid kit to assist swimmers who may have a minor cut or scratch.
Poles
Pole (used with a life hook or independently) - The pole allows the rescuer to safely reach for a drowning victim.
Water Toys are not Safety Equipment!
