  • Come to Split Oak Forest on Saturday, April 8, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., for Gopher Tortoise Day! Sheldon the gopher tortoise will preside over the festivities as a species ambassador – handled by wildlife rehabilitator, Swamp Girl Adventures' Kim Titterington and staff. Activities throughout the day include guided hikes to see a gopher tortoise habitat; craft activities geared for youngsters (of all ages) to create their own gopher tortoise art; Orange and Osceola chapters of Florida Native Plant Society discussing gopher tortoise forage; and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) providing educational materials to attendees.
