Legionellosis (Legionnaires’ Disease and Pontiac Fever)
The Florida Department of Health is investigating a potential Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. This disease is caused by a bacteria known as Legionella, which thrives in warm, aquatic environments and are relatively resistant to the effects of chlorine and heat. Legionella are generally spread through the air by aerosolized water, which is then inhaled. It generally cannot be spread person to person and is treatable with antibiotics. The Florida Department of Health is monitoring the situation and people who would like more information can find that here.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has more information on the bacteria, Legionairres’ disease and Pontiac Fever, which is also caused by Legionella bacteria. For more information, click here.
Measles
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says measles is highly contagious. If one person has it, 9 out of 10 people nearby will become infected if they are not properly vaccinated. The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is a two-shot vaccination that is 97% effective in preventing the disease if the person has received both doses. If a person has received one dose of the vaccine, it is 93% effective.
The CDC also provides guidance on what parents should do if they are getting their child vaccinated.
