How does the pilot program work?

There are two different pathways to participate in this composting pilot program:

(Select a graphic to show more details about each option.)

Option 1: Composting Bin

Option 1: Orange County will provide participants with a free at-home composting unit that you can easily pick up and assemble on your property. This option is ideal if you have outdoor space (about 5 ft. by 5 ft. needed for the bin) and want a simple way to turn your household food scraps and other organics on your property (like yard waste) into fresh, usable compost for landscaping or houseplants. This is the best choice for households that want the full benefits of composting at home, including access to finished compost you can use year-round. There will be no collection of food waste or compost using this option; participants will manage their generated food waste and compost independently.

There are two different styles of backyard composting bins that participants who select Option 1 can choose between:

Tumbler-Style 37 Gallon Composting Bin

Tumbler-Style 37 Gallon Composting Bin
A good choice for households with limited yard/outdoor space and who don’t produce a lot of organic waste. It is completely enclosed and the dual-chamber design allows for users to have each chamber actively composting two “piles” at a time, at different rates.

Large 246 Gallon Open-Air Composting Bin

Large 246 Gallon Open-Air Composting Bin
Best suited for households with larger yard/outdoor space. This option is ideal for households that produce a larger amount of organic waste (food waste and yard waste) and are interested in producing more finished compost product for use at home. This bin requires manual turning using the included compost turner, is open-air, and requires greater access to brown materials (e.g., dry leaves, straw, shredded newspaper, cardboard) to include in the pile to ensure it stays dry.

Option 2: Food Waste Collection Service

Option 2: is for households who would prefer a two month trial of an at-home food/organic waste pick-up service. In this model, a County-contracted food waste collection vendor would provide you with a 5-gallon collection bin with BPI-certified compostable liner for your food waste and allowable household organics. This bin would be placed out by your front door on a designated day and time, and the vendor would conduct a once-a-week pickup from the bin, similar to your current trash and recycling services. You would receive 8 free pickups with this service, and the vendor would remove the bin on your 8th pickup. This option can work for a variety of housing types, but is particularly useful for participants who do not have the space requirements for an at-home composting unit. However, this option would not provide participants with finished compost product to use at home.
