Parks and greenspaces are some of the most valued features of any community. In District 1, there are several current and future priorities to ensure parks are available for residents throughout the area.
Check out a handful of the upcoming developments!
Groundbreaking on the latest Horizon West Park in Summerport occurred in January 2014 and will be opening to the public in June. The park includes a community garden, playground, dog park, walking paths with outdoor fitness stations, a performance platform and junior soccer field.
Several community meetings were held in late 2013 to gather feedback about the concept plan for this new park located in Horizon West. Final designs were completed in February 2014 and construction began in March. The goal is for the park to be completed by October 1, 2014, with a grand opening scheduled for the fall.
On February 25, 2014, the real estate purchase agreement for a 19.5 acre tract on Ficquette Road went before the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) consent agenda for approval. The purchase agreement was approved by the BCC and funding from the venues package will be used to develop the site with multi-use recreation fields.

A Request for Proposals for conducting a Feasibility Study is currently out to bid. The goal is to determine what potential features and amenities could be incorporated into the 200-plus acre complex.
The Parks and Recreation, Public Works and Planning Divisions along with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are working with an independent contractor on a study to analyze existing and proposed trail data and recommend an arterial and local trail system. The final study, once released, will include recommendations for accepting trails and creating trail construction standards.
Currently the 8.5-mile section of the trail from Sand Lake Road to Osceola County is in the design phase and plans are under review by staff. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has programmed the trail for construction from Sand Lake Road to Central Florida Parkway in FY2015-16 through FY2016-17.The remainder of the project is on MetroPlan Orlando’s prioritization list, awaiting funding and will eventually tie into the City of Orlando’s portion North of Sand Lake.
Several community meetings were held to gather input on the design for the 27-acre park located in the vicinity of Hunter’s Creek and Meadowoods. The recreational complex, which is anticipated to open early 2015, will include two multi-use fields, a playground, exercise areas, picnic pavilions and a skate park.
